What is Omega-5 Fatty Acid?

In this article, we are going to look at the less known Omega 5 fatty acid. What is it, why do we need it and how can we get it naturally.

Make sure to read it to the end to discover how you can get the recommended daily dose in your diet easily.

Omega-5 fatty acid is...

Omega 5 is also known as Punicic acid. Punicic acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid naturally available in pomegranate seed oil. It is a potent antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic.

Carcinogenic means the potential to cause cancer. Carcinogens are harmful substances that may be in the air, in products we use, or chemicals used in foods and drinks. In our day-to-day life, we may not be able to avoid these. Omega 5 may be able to provide an added layer of protection for the body, with studies suggesting punicic acid having cancer inhibitor properties.

What else do we know about Omega 5?

1. It is a great source of Vitamin C and K

Vitamin C helps to protect cells; maintains healthy skin, blood vessels, bones, and cartilage; and aids with healing wounds. Vitamin K is a key ingredient for blood clotting.

2. It’s great for the skin and easily absorb-able by the skin

Punicic acid can help improve skin elasticity and even skin tone. One study suggests that Omega 5 from pomegranate seed oil helps to stimulate the generation of collagen in the body. Collagen is important for skin and gums. As we grow older our bodies produce less collagen, leading to dry skin and wrinkles.

3. It eliminates free radicals that cause damage to cells and premature ageing

Free radicals are unstable atoms, that if they inundate the body's ability to regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress occurs. Free radicals may then begin the process of harmfully altering lipids, proteins, and DNA, triggering a number of human diseases.

4. Resilient against inflammation

Omega 5 supports the body’s resilience against inflammation of the cells triggered by stress, environmental toxins and poor diet.

Sources of Omega 3

So, where can we get these naturally?

We can get these from pomegranate seed oil. Pomegranate is known as one of the world's most ancient fruits and is native to the Middle East, Iran being the origin.

Another source is coconut oil. Widely available everywhere with great health benefits. Definitely consider using this in your cooking.

Another is, Snake guard. Found in India and some parts of Asia but it is native to Australia. It looks very much like cucumber and is consumed as a vegetable.

In animal products, Omega 5 can be found in salmon and full-fat grass-fed dairy products.

With the extraordinary properties Omega 5 contains, studies have shown that Omega 5 fatty acid has a positive effect in patients with prostate cancer and breast cancer.

Healthy living is about prevention, therefore, Omega 5 should be part of the arsenal of naturally bio-available remedies that can be used against developing chronic diseases.
